The Department of Surgery, Division of Anatomy at the University of Toronto invites applications for nomination to a Canada Research Chair, Tier 2, in Glia and Neural Repair /Reactive astrocytes with a research program that is linked to the University’s CFREF program, Medicine by Design. Applicants must be tenure-stream Assistant or Associate Professors in the Department of Surgery.
Tier 2 Chairs are for emerging scholars and the successful nominee should be within ten years of receiving their PhD. To meet the criteria of the program, nominees must be excellent emerging world-class researchers who have demonstrated particular research creativity; have demonstrated the potential to achieve international recognition in their fields in the next five to ten years; as chairholders, have the potential to attract, develop and retain excellent trainees, students and future researchers; and be proposing an original, innovative research program of high quality.
Applicants who are more than 10 years from having earned their highest degree (and where career breaks exist, such as maternity, parental or extended sick leave, clinical training, etc.) may have their eligibility for a Tier 2 chair assessed through the program’s Tier 2 justification process.
The Department of Surgery, Division of Anatomy is particularly interested in candidates with expertise in neuroscience and regenerative medicine with particular focus on the role of astrocytes in development and injury/disease, and applicants with expertise in these fields will be given priority.
Applications should include: 1) a 100 word executive summary, describing the uniqueness and importance of the proposed research program, 2) a maximum 6 page description of the proposed research plan, including a) context – what makes the research program original, innovative and of high quality b) the methodology c) engagement with research users and communication of results , e.g. how the research results will be disseminated e) description of proposed training strategies that will attract, develop and retrain excellent students and trainees 2) a curriculum vitae, 3) if you are more than 10 years from having earned your highest degree, an explanation of why you feel you qualify for a justification as described in the link above.
