Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE) - Special Call
September 21, 2020
The Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE) invites applications for nomination to a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in any area related to OISE’s purpose and breadth of scholarship. OISE expects to select up to two (2) Canada Research Chair, SSHRC Tier 2, nominees for the spring 2021 competition. Applicants must be tenure-stream Assistant or Associate Professors at OISE.
OISE’s community strongly believes that a commitment to social justice should permeate and drive the Institute’s work (OISE Academic Plan, Learning and Leading from Within 2017-2022). In order to address the under-representation of women, Indigenous people, persons with disabilities and members of visible minorities within the CRC Program as a whole (as identified by the Tri-Agency Institution Programs Secretariat), this special call is open only to OISE faculty members who self-identify as members of at least one of these four designated groups[1]. This initiative follows the provisions for special programs as described by the Ontario Human Rights Commission. The identification of outstanding candidates from these designated groups contributes to OISE’s commitment to social justice, equity, diversity, and inclusiveness and supports the University’s commitment to equity, diversity, and excellence, and – in particular – its ability to meet the objectives of the Canada Research Chair Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Action Plan.
Tier 2 Chairs are for emerging scholars. The successful nominee must be within ten years of receiving their highest degree at the time of nomination (spring 2021). Applicants who are more than 10 years from their highest degree but have career breaks (e.g., maternity, parental or extended sick leave, clinical training), may have their eligibility for a Tier 2 chair assessed through the program’s Tier 2 justification process. The length of career break(s) subtracted from the time since the applicant’s highest degree must equal 10 years or less.
Selection criteria: To meet the criteria of the program, nominees must:
- be excellent emerging world-class researchers who have demonstrated particular research creativity;
- have demonstrated the potential to achieve international recognition in their fields in the next five to ten years;
- as Chairholders, have the potential to attract, develop and retain excellent trainees, students and future researchers; and
- be proposing an original, innovative research program of high quality.
OISE is committed to fostering research excellence across disciplines and departments; in addition to these criteria, the selection committee may also consider the departmental allocation/distribution of Chairs in making its final decisions from among a group of top-ranked candidates.
Selection of a proposed nominee is made by a committee, and achieved through a process, that conforms to the requirements set out in the University’s Canada Research Chairs: Guide to Nominations and Renewals. The selection committee will be comprised of a minimum of four OISE faculty members from across the four departments.
Applications should include: 1) a letter of interest describing their qualifications and research plans for the position; 2) a curriculum vitae; and 3) if more than 10 years from the highest degree, an explanation that supports a justification as described in the link above.
In their letters of interest (not exceeding 2,000 words), applicants should:
- present a summary of their qualifications by addressing the CRC Tier 2 Chair selection criteria:
- Excellent emerging world-class researchers who have demonstrated particular research creativity;
- Demonstrated potential to achieve international recognition in their fields in the next five to ten years;
- Potential to attract, develop and retain excellent trainees, students and future researchers
- briefly outline an original, innovative research program of high quality, including:
- The key objectives of the proposed CRC research program
- The unique and innovative aspects of the proposed research program
- The expected impact of the research program
Complete applications must be submitted to oise.research@utoronto.ca by October 21, 2020.

The University recognizes that scholars have varying career paths and that career interruptions due to personal circumstances can be part of an excellent academic record. Nomination committee members have been instructed to carefully consider, and be sensitive to the impact of, career interruptions in their assessments.
The University of Toronto is strongly committed to diversity within its community and welcomes applications from members of the four designated groups who also identify as LGBTQ persons and others who may contribute to the further diversification of ideas.
The University is committed to the principles of the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA). As such, we strive to make our assessment and selection processes as accessible as possible, and provide accommodations as required for applicants with disabilities. Requests for workplace accommodations and related issues can be addressed to the office of Health & Wellbeing Programs and Services.
