Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE) - Special Call

July 14, 2021

The Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE) invites applications for nomination to a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in any area related to OISE’s purpose and breadth of scholarship. Tier 1 Chairs are for outstanding researchers acknowledged by their peers as world leaders in their fields. OISE expects to select up to one (1) Canada Research Chair, SSHRC Tier 1, nominee for an early 2022 nomination. Applicants must be tenured full professors or associate professors who are expected to be promoted to full professor within one or two years of the CRC nomination. The nominee’s research area must align with the subject matter eligibility of Social Sciences & Humanities Research Council (SSHRC).

OISE’s community strongly believes that a commitment to social justice should permeate and drive the Institute’s work (OISE Academic Plan, Learning and Leading from Within 2017-2022). In order to address the under-representation of women, Indigenous people, persons with disabilities and members of visible minorities within the CRC Program as a whole (as identified by the Tri-Agency Institution Programs Secretariat), this special call is open only to OISE faculty members who self-identify as members of at least one of these four designated groups[1]. This initiative follows the provisions for special programs as described by the Ontario Human Rights Commission. The identification of outstanding candidates from these designated groups contributes to OISE’s commitment to social justice, equity, diversity, and inclusiveness and supports the University’s commitment to equity, diversity, and excellence, and – in particular – its ability to meet the objectives of the Canada Research Chair Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Action Plan.

Selection criteria: To meet the criteria of the program, nominees must:

  • be outstanding and innovative world-class researchers whose accomplishments have made a major impact in their fields;
  • be recognized internationally as leaders in their fields;
  • have superior records of attracting and supervising graduate students and postdoctoral fellows (taking into account different practices in the relevant field or discipline) and, as chairholders, be expected to attract, develop and retain excellent trainees, students and future researchers; and
  • be proposing an original, innovative research program of the highest quality.

Selection of a proposed nominee is made by a committee, and achieved through a process, that conforms to the requirements set out in the University’s Canada Research Chairs: Guide to Nominations and Renewals. The selection committee will be comprised of a minimum of four OISE faculty members from across the four departments.

Applications should include: 1) a letter of interest describing the applicant’s qualifications and research plans for the position; 2) a curriculum vitae.

  2. briefly outline an original, innovative research program of highest quality, including:
    1. The key objectives of the proposed CRC research program
    2. The unique and innovative aspects of the proposed research program
    3. The expected impact of the research program

Applicants should submit a scholarly CV that includes – among other CV elements – clear and comprehensive information on research funding (including tri-agency funding), outputs and supervisions. Please specify the following information:

  • For research funding – ensure that all awarded funding includes the date awarded, total value, sponsor and program name, duration, role (e.g., PI/Co-PI/Co-Investigator/collaborator). If Co-PI or Co-Investigator, describe the nature and extent of your role.

Include all authors and ensure authorship status is clear; it is also helpful to indicate student co-authors (e.g. underline). Where appropriate, describe the impact of outputs.
