Associate Professor - African Diasporas and Development in the Global South

The Centre for Critical Development Studies at the University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC) invite applications for a tenure stream position in African Diasporas and Development in the Global South. This will be a joint appointment between the Centre (49%) and the Department of Political Science (51%) or the Department of Sociology (51%), depending on the field of expertise of the successful candidate. The appointment will be at the rank of Associate Professor and will commence on July 1st, 2021 or shortly thereafter.

An appropriately qualified individual may also be nominated for a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair.

Tier 2 Chairs are for exceptional emerging scholars. Nominees should be within ten years of receiving their PhD. Applicants who are more than 10 years from having earned their highest degree (and where career breaks exist, such as maternity, parental or extended sick leave, clinical training, etc.) may have their eligibility for a Tier 2 chair assessed through the program’s Tier 2 justification process.

Applicants must have a PhD in International Development Studies, Political Science, Sociology, or a closely related field and have a demonstrated exceptional record of excellence in research and teaching. We seek candidates whose research and teaching interests complement and deepen our existing departmental strengths (https://www.utsc.utoronto.ca/ccds/faculty; https://www.utsc.utoronto.ca/polisci/faculty; https://www.utsc.utoronto.ca/sociology/faculty). The successful candidate’s primary research and teaching focus must be on African Diasporas and Development in the Global South. Candidates with a focus on political economy, gender, race, and/or social movements and their intersections will be preferred. Candidates must have experience using qualitative community-based or field research methods. Experience as a development practitioner will also be an asset, as will lived experience related to Africa and its diaspora. 

Candidates will have an established international reputation and will be expected to sustain and lead innovative and independent research at the highest international level and to maintain an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded research program. Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence as demonstrated by a record of sustained high-impact contributions and publications in top-ranked field-relevant journals and/or academic presses, the submitted research statement, significant conference presentations, awards and accolades, and other noteworthy activities that contribute to the visibility and prominence of the discipline, as well as strong endorsements from referees of high standing.

The candidate will have a demonstrated record of teaching excellence. Evidence of excellence in teaching will be provided through teaching accomplishments, the teaching dossier submitted as part of the application including a strong teaching statement, sample course syllabi, and the teaching evaluations, as well as strong letters of reference. Candidates are also expected to show evidence of a commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and the promotion of a respectful and collegial learning and working environment demonstrated through the application materials.

The successful candidate will be expected to provide intellectual leadership of, and contribute to teaching in, UTSC’s evolving African Studies program (https://www.utsc.utoronto.ca/hcs/african-studies). The successful candidate must also be able to contribute core teaching in Critical Development Studies (http://www.utsc.utoronto.ca/ccds/), Political Science (http://www.utsc.utoronto.ca/polisci/), and/or Sociology (https://www.utsc.utoronto.ca/sociology/). Preference will be given to candidates whose teaching incorporates opportunities for undergraduate experiential learning and community engagement.
