The Faculty of Arts & Science at the University of Toronto invites applications for nomination to an NSERC Canada Research Chair, Tier 1. The subject area is open, provided that the candidate’s active research program aligns with NSERC’s mandate to advance knowledge in one or more of the natural sciences or engineering disciplines, other than the health sciences. Applicants must be budgetary full-time tenured Professors or Associate Professors in an academic unit within the Faculty of Arts & Science (St. George Campus).

In order to address the underrepresentation of groups who experience systemic barriers in the CRC Program (as identified by the Tri-Agency Institutional Programs Secretariat), this special call is open only to individuals who self-identify as persons with disabilities, as defined by the Employment Equity Act. This initiative follows the provisions for special programs as described by the Ontario Human Rights Commission. The identification of outstanding candidates from these designated groups supports the University and Faculty commitments to equity, diversity, and inclusion, and our public mission for the pursuit of excellence and equity, as well as the institutional capacity to fulfill the objectives of the University’s Canada Research Chairs Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Action Plan.

Tier 1 Chairs are for outstanding established scholars. To meet the criteria of the program, nominees must be outstanding and innovative world-class researchers whose accomplishments have made a major impact in their fields; be recognized internationally as leaders in their fields; have superior records of attracting and supervising graduate students and postdoctoral fellows (taking into account different practices in the relevant field or discipline) and, as Chairholders, be expected to attract, develop and retain excellent trainees, students and future researchers; and be proposing an original, innovative research program of the highest quality.

To be considered, the nominee must hold an active CRC-relevant tri-agency grant (i.e., NSERC Discovery Grant) and/or be actively applying for tri-agency funding. The nominee’s research area must align with the subject matter eligibility of NSERC.

Applications should include 1) a letter of interest describing your qualifications 2) your research plan (up to three pages) for the seven-year term of the Chair; and 3) a curriculum vitae. All materials should be submitted to l.hansen@utoronto.ca by July 23, 2025.
