June 22nd, 2018

The Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto invites applications for nomination to a Canada Research Chair, Tier 2 (CIHR). Applicants must be campus-based, tenure-stream Assistant or Associate Professors in the Faculty of Medicine.  The applicant’s research program must align with the University’s Medicine by Design (MbD) program: a convergence of physical and life sciences, engineering, mathematics and medicine to undertake transformative research in regenerative medicine and cell therapy.

Tier 2 Chairs are for emerging scholars and the successful nominee should be within ten years of receiving their PhD.  To meet the criteria of the program, nominees must be excellent emerging world-class researchers who have demonstrated particular research creativity; have demonstrated the potential to achieve international recognition in their fields in the next five to ten years; as chairholders, have the potential to attract, develop and retain excellent trainees, students and future researchers; and be proposing an original, innovative research program of high quality.

Applicants who are more than 10 years from having earned their highest degree (and where career breaks exist, such as maternity, parental or extended sick leave, clinical training, etc.) may have their eligibility for a Tier 2 chair assessed through the program’s Tier 2 justification process.

Applications should include:

  • a complete academic curriculum vitae.
  • a two-page research proposal highlighting major themes of research to be completed over the next five years
  • a one-page description of how the applicant will help attract additional resources, including financial, non-financial, training and/or collaboration opportunities.
  • if you are more than 10 years from having earned your highest degree, an explanation of why you feel you qualify for a justification as described in the link above.

All materials should be submitted to cindy.faber@utoronto.ca and Jeremy.knight@utoronto.ca by August 1, 2018. Please include “CRC Tier 2, Medicine by Design” in the subject line of your email.

Further information regarding nomination and eligibility criteria may be found here. For more information about the CRC nomination process at the University of Toronto, contact Judith Chadwick, Assistant Vice-President, Research Services – crc@utoronto.ca or visit www.research.utoronto.ca/crc.

Search committee members have been instructed to give careful consideration to, and be sensitive to the impact of, career interruptions in their assessments.

All applicants to this CRC opportunity are required to answer the University of Toronto’s Employment Equity Survey. Applicants may voluntarily self-identify in any of the groups, or log a response indicating they decline the survey. Self-identification data is important to the University’s ability to accurately respond to equity targets set by the Canada Research Chair program.  Any information directly related to you is confidential and cannot be accessed by the search committee. Aggregated results as of the closing of this posting will be sent the search committee chair and no information about groups of three or less is reported. If you have already completed the survey, thank you; your responses will be included in the aggregated results.
