The NHS datasets available in the Research Data Centres (RDCs) consists of three types of files: Core Datasets, Supplementary Datasets, and Concordance Key.

  • Core Datasets includes the following three base files: 1) inhabitants population file; 2) NHS project file; and 3) a list of units associated with the inhabitants. The inhabitants population file identifies residents in NHS-funded buildings, including tax filers and non-tax filers, who are identified through tax returns and slips. The file includes information on the start and end years of each inhabitant’s residency at the census subdivision level. The project file contains detailed characteristics of the projects associated with the buildings linked to inhabitants. The unit file lists all the units within the buildings that were linked to the Statistics Canada address database and to inhabitants between 2016 and 2023.
  • Supplementary Datasets are extracts from annual tax datasets. They contain tax records belonging to inhabitants. Supplementary Datasets include selected variables on income earned through employment, employment status, benefits and social assistance, and on family composition from the T1 Family File (T1FF) and files from three slips: T4 – Statement of Earnings Paid, T4E – Statement of Employment Insurance Benefits and Other Benefits, and T5007 - Statement of Benefits between 2016 and 2023. In addition, variables on the distance and amount of access to essential services and amenities in a given neighborhood through the Proximity Measures Database, 2021 are also available. To assist data users in assessing changes in family income across cycles, a master T1FF dataset that includes individuals from all cycles is also provided.
  • Concordance Key Files allows the inhabitants population file to be merged with other datasets that have already been published in the RDCs. These include the 2016 and 2021 Census data, Canadian Housing Survey results from 2018 to 2022, and the Longitudinal Immigration Database (IMDB) from 1980 to 2023.
