Scientists aim to discover the structure and function of important biological macromolecules (proteins, viruses, complexes, etc) by computing 3D atomic structures from a large set of noisy 2D electron micrograph images of the target molecule. This invention is a set of advanced methods for accelerating this process by several orders of magnitude as it can be used to reconstruct the atomic resolution structure of a typical protein molecule in only a few hours on a commodity desktop computer with GPU (protein structure determination typically takes weeks on clusters of hundreds of computers, using conventional techniques).
